What is Typhoon?
Typhoon is an advanced research initiative focused on developing open-source large language models (LLMs) specifically optimized for the Thai language. As a hub for cutting-edge AI innovation, Typhoon offers open-source models, datasets, tooling, and research that enable the development of tailored AI solutions for real-world use cases. Our models, APIs, and research previews like Typhoon Audio and Typhoon Vision are designed to push the boundaries of Thai language understanding and multimodal AI capabilities, offering free access to model weights, datasets, and tools to foster collaboration and innovation within the AI research community.
We believe Thailand needs its own AI models to ensure that our unique linguistic and cultural identity is accurately represented and preserved in the age of AI. While global models can speak Thai, they often lack the deep understanding of cultural nuances that are crucial to truly capturing "Thainess." Thai is a low-resource language, meaning that it is underrepresented in global datasets, leading to AI models that may misunderstand or overlook the subtleties of the Thai language. We are building Typhoon to address this by developing open-source, Thai-optimized models that reflect our culture and support a multi-model AI future. This initiative is not just about technological progress; it's about achieving technological sovereignty, ensuring that Thailand can shape its own AI development and adapt it to local needs. Through open-source collaboration, Typhoon aims to empower Thailand to lead in AI innovation while preserving its cultural heritage.

As part of SCB 10X, the Venture Capital and Innovation arm of SCBX, we are focused on creating AI tools that enhance cultural and linguistic understanding while empowering the local tech community.
